  • Description

The President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Siaka Stevens, opened the first session of the Republic's Second Parliament at Freetown on Friday (22 June) with a one-hour speech from the throne.

For the first time in the history of Sierra Leone, all members of Parliament were dressed alike in light green suits, instead of the extravagant colours usually seen at such occasions.

Before the official ceremony, Dr. Stevens was given a colourful welcome to Parliament when he was flanked by women singing and dressed in costumes.

SYNOPSIS: In one of Sierra Leone's most colourful ceremonies, the President of the Republic, Doctor Siaka Stevens was given a guard of honour of dancing girls on Friday as he made his way to open the first session of the second Parliament. The colourfully-dressed girls sang and clapped their hands as the President passed them.

Banners and placards welcomed the President and his ministers as they made their way to the State Parliament House.

In his sixty-minute speech to open Parliament, Doctor Stevens said that his Government would continue to foster international peace and security, and to uphold and fully support the principles of the United Nations charter.

At an official party after the ceremony, Doctor Stevens entertained Government officials and VIP guests who were at the opening of Parliament. The occasion was an important one in Sierra Leone's history, because for the first time, all the members of Parliament were dressed alike, in green suits. In the past, there's been no uniformity in dress.
