  • Description

THE "FORMA VIVA" CONCEPT OF ARTISTS' SYMPOSIUMS IS COMMON IN EUROPE, AND RECENTLY THERE HAVE BEEN FURTHER EXAMPLES IN YUGOSLAVIA. THE IDEA WAS STARTED IN 1959 IN THE AUSTRIAN VILLAGE OF ST MARGARETHEN. THE PURPOSE OF A "FORMA VIVA" SYMPOSIUM IS FOR ARTISTS TO LIVE AND WORK TOGETHER, DISCUSSING THEIR SEPARATE OR COMMUNAL DESIGNS.

IN YUGOSLAVIA THERE ARE THREE "FORMA VIVA" SITES -- KOSTANJEVICA, WHERE WOODEN SCULPTURES ARE MADE; PORTOROZ, WHERE ALL THE WORKS ARE IN STONE, AND RAVNE, FOR IRON SCULPTURES. IN MOST OTHER PARTS OF EUROPE, "FORMA VIVA" WORKS ARE LATER SOLD TO THE PUBLIC, BUT IN YUGOSLAVIA THE SCULPTURES ARE LEFT IN PARKS AND REMAIN FOR VISITORS TO ADMIRE.

ON SUCH EXERCISES A YUGOSLAV JURY SELECTS ARTISTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO SUBMIT THEIR IDEAS. THEN THE CHOSEN ARTISTS ARE INVITED TO YUGOSLAVIA FOR TWO MONTHS, THEIR TRAVEL AND LIVING EXPENSES BEING PAID. THE IDEA IS POPULAR WITH THE SCULPTORS AND OTHER ARTISTS, WHO CAN LIVE AND WORK IN PEACEFUL SURROUNDINGS, COMPARING NOTES AND LEARNING FROM ONE ANOTHER.

THIS FILM SHOWS SEVERAL ARTISTS FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AT WORK.
