  • Description

A funeral service was held today (Monday) for eight of the nine victims of last week's mortar tragedy in West Germany. The ninth victim, a Dutch officer, is being buried in Holland.

They were killed when a mortar bomb hit their truck during a NATO exercise near Munster Lager, on Lueneberg Heath. The dead were a Dutch officer, an Indonesian officer, two West German officers and five West German soldiers.

Today's funeral service took place at the Bergen-Hohne military camp at Munster Lager. It was attended by NATO military representatives, Indonesian military attaches and next-of-kin. The West German Government was represented by the Defence Minister, Herr Kai-Uwe von Hassel.

An official spokesman said that during the exercise several mortar shots were off target. The fatal bomb veered several hundred metres and hit the truck.

An inquiry into the cause of the accident is still going on.
