    After an absence of five years the North Vietnam Circus has returned to Hanoi. It was evacuate from the city in 1965 and since then has only performed in quiet provincial centres.

    Now the big top has been set up again in the Tonyat Park in Hanoi for a month-long season.

    The North Vietnam Circus was founded in 1945 with the help of Chinese circus artistes. It is financed by the government and the member of the circus company are government employees. Today there are 118 in the company, most of them women. Their salaries are guaranteed and they get a pension when they retire.

    The circus is very popular in North Vietnam which is short of other forms of entertainment. There are few cinemas and television is a luxury.

    Tonyat Park, where the circus in now performing, is in the centre of Hanoi. The North Vietnamese say that the circus is playing to packed audiences every night and that it will have to extent its season by popular demand.
