TRANSCRIPT: "Mr. Wilson made the journey from Belfast to Londonderry by helicopter, after a planned drive had been cancelled for security reasons. He was met by the senior army and police officers for the area and went immediately to the operations room to be briefed on the latest developments. A planned drive around the town was also called off on security grounds. Mr. Wilson's only expedition into the town itself was to a heavily guarded Guildhall where he spent over an working on with the development commission which administers the area. For the first time in months there was a full turn out of members including the four Catholics who withdrew in August. Outside the Guildhall, security was tightened even further when a small crowd, mainly women, gathered. But Mr. Wilson's reception when he left was a friendly one. Back within the safety of army headquarters, he had his first opportunity so far this week to talk to the soldiers who patrolled the streets."

Background: Britain's Opposition Labour leader Harold Wilson met local Government officials and troops on the third day of his visit to Northern Ireland on Wednesday (17 November).

Mr. Wilson's visit is being shrouded in strict security following fears that there may be an attempt on the Labour Leader's life. He travelled to Londonderry by helicopter and a scheduled drive around the town was cancelled for security reasons.

SYNOPSIS: Britain's Opposition Labour Leader, Mr. Harold Wilson, arrived in Londonderry on Wednesday by helicopter, after a planned drive had been cancelled for security reasons. A scheduled drive around the town was also cancelled for security reasons, following fears that there might be an attempt on his life. It was the third day of the Labour Leader's five-day visit to Northern Ireland to assess the situation and to talk with Government officials in the Irish Republic.

Mr. Wilson's only call in the town itself was to a heavily-guarded Guildhall -- the seat of the local Government. He spent over an hour there, working with the development commission which administers the area. For the first time in months, there was a full turn-out of members, including the four Catholics who withdrew in August.

Outside the Guildhall, the security measures were even tighter, after a small crowd -- mainly women -- had gathered. But Mr. Wilson received a friendly welcome when he left, and stopped to talk with some of the people He also spoke to troops stationed in the area, asking how long they had been in Northern Ireland and wishing them luck in their duties.
