    Six workmen died and two were critically injured when steel scaffolding collapsed on a bridge building site on the trans-Canada highway in Montreal on Thursday. Steel support rods had buckled under the weight of 1,600 tons of wet concrete.

    Rescue teams worked through the night to free two men buried in the rubble. One was dead when found and the other was taken to hospital in critical condition. The section that collapsed was 104 feet (30 metres) long and 25 feet (8 metres) high.
