  • Description

Under increasing pressure to reduce pollution in the world's largest city, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is currently testing two new systems designed to cut down exhaust emissions from motor vehicles.

One is an after-burner which removes harmful gases from the exhaust system and the other is the latest electrically-powered car.

The after-burner uses a catalyst of manganese which its developers - Mitsui Mining and Smelting Company - say is more efficient in removing nitrogen oxide from exhaust gases than platinum catalysts now in use.

Its makers also claim the after-burner removes more than ninety per cant of the carbon monoxide and more than eighty-five per cent of the hydrocarbon in exhaust gases.

The city government has approved the sale of the after-burners to Tokyo motorists. The cost: about $US75 (GBP30 approx sterling).

The Toyota Motor Company is co-operating with government technicians in developing an electric car which would not emit any pollution.

The latest research model, called the Publica, has a top speed of 50 miles per hour (80 Kms per hour) and a range of about 50 miles (80 Km).

However, because of the size and weight of its batteries, the Publica can carry only two people and there are few places in Tokyo where its batteries can be recharged.

SYNOPSIS: Tokyo is known as one of the world's most polluted cities and the Metropolitan Government is coming under increasing pressure to reduce motor exhaust pollution.

In on project, government research technicians have worked with a large motor company to produce a new exhaust after-burner.

The burner uses a catalyst of manganese to reduce exhaust gases such as nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide by, the makes claim, as much as ninety per cent.

The city government has approved the device and it's now on sale in Tokyo at a cost of about thirty pounds. It's hoped that widespread use of the after-burner may help to keep Tokyo's air a little cleaner.

Development of electrically-powered cars may lead to vehicles which don't produce any pollution.

This latest research model is called the Publica and is powered by twelve batteries which give the car a top speed of fifty miles an hour.

However, its developers say much more work will have to be done before the electric car will be ready for the public. The power unit is co heavy that the car can carry only two passengers and there are few places in Tokyo where its batteries can be recharged.
