    Millions of Egyptians turned out as President Richard Nixon made a train ride through the Nile Delta to the port of Alexandria on Thursday (13 June). In the town itself three and a half million people crammed all vantage points. They waved banners reading "God Bless Nixon" and "We trust Nixon". But one sign seen the in the streets said "Remember the Palestinians". It was a pointed reminder that the Egyptian people expected Mr. Nixon to be on their side in the most crucial problem of all in the Arab-israeli dispute. It was astimated that three and a half million people turned out to see the Resident who was accompanied by President Anwar Sadat, the Egyptian leader.

    In a news conference before the train arrived in Alexandria, President Nixon docl???ed he would not make rash promises of support for President Sadat as a result of his tour. Mr. Nixon said he would not make any dramatic gestures or promises to build up an image to counteract the Watergate scandal.

    SYNOPSIS: An estimated three and a half million people crammed every vantage point in Alexandria on Thursday to witness the arrival of the first American President to make a trip to Egypt. Accompanied by President Anwar Sadat, President Nixon travelled to the port by train through the Nile Delta.

    The two Presidents made a tour through the city streets in an open car. Security was heavy had vantage points were manned by armed guards as helicopters patrolled overhead.

    The crowd carried banners supporting President Nixon. But among them was a reminder to "Remember the Palestinians", a pointed reference to the fact that the Egyptian people expected President Nixon on their side in the most crucial problem i the Arab-Israeli dispute. The visit to Alexandria was later described as the most rousing ever given the American leader.
