  • Description

Celebrations were held in Niger on Tuesday (15 April) to mark the first anniversary of an army coup which overthrew President Hamani Diori.

President Diori had been in power since Niger won independence from France in 1960.

In a national radio broadcast on Monday night the President of Niger, Lieutenant-Colonel Seyni Kountche, who led the coup, said much progress had been made since last year.

He said the Supreme Military Council had made great advances in the fields of Social welfare, youth, commerce and the exploitation of the country's mineral resources, mainly uranium.

A special effort would be made in the coming year for the enforcement of social peace.

On Tuesday (15 April) Colonel Kountche attended a rally in the former Square of the National Assembly in Niemey where he reviewed troops and presented medals to veterans.
