Background: The Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society - a regular committee of the North Atlantic treaty Organisation (NATO) met in Brussels on Monday (19 October). Delegates from all 15 member-nations of NATO attended the two-day conference on environmental problems.

The Committee was set up in November last year on the initiative of the United States President, Richard Nixon, to consider specific problems of the human environment with the objective of stimulating action by member governments. Although the Committee acts as an exchange for views and experience, it also asks countries to undertake pilot projects.

NATO's efforts in this field are not aimed at research, but as the formulation of government policy and legislation to deal with environmental issues. Member countries offer to sponsor a project, either alone or in association with others. These associate countries are usually NATO members but some projects have invited non-members to assist.

Pollution of the air and of inland and coastal waters - is the subject of three projects. Road Safety, disaster assistance and regional development are studies already underway. Urban development are studies already underway. Urban development and narcotics are being considered as possible subjects for projects.
