  • Description

Nearly thirteen million East Germans went to the polls on November 16.

In the provinces they were voting for the national government candidates. In East Berlin they were voting for the city council.

Official figures awaited were expected to be similar to the 1954 figures when 99.46 per cent. of the votes went to the official candidates.

Voting itself was a simple matter. The voter was handed a slip bearing the candidates' names. All he had to do was place the marked slip in on urn under the eyes of the Communist officials.

For those who wished to vote against the official candidates or to vote for other candidates, booths were available.

Business at those booths, it was reported, was quiet.
