AHMED: "Well, the third day of October around nine o'clock in the morning two American made jet fighters, F5's, and a British made Canberra invaded the city of Jijiga and they have chosen for their first position for their bombardment the city hospital which the Abyssinians made and used before the city was liberated on August 27th and the second target was the market place in the city. This savage action is not the first time the Abyssinians made but for the whole period of the last 15 months they have been using such ways bombarding wherever they saw people, camels, sheep and even the wells."

REPORTER: "In other words, they hit targets of opportunity."

AHMED: "Yes. We would like to appeal...to send our appeal...to all nations of the world through the international press...to those who know the value of life, the human rights and the meeting of freedom."

Background: The Somali-held town of Jijiga has recently been the scene of the biggest battle so far in the war in Eastern Ethiopia.

SYNOPSIS: According to Mogadishu radio, seven civilians were killed and twenty seriously injured when Ethiopian jets bombed the hospital at Jijiga. The radio said the raid took place in broad daylight last Tuesday (4 October) while a group of foreign journalists was visiting the town. A British journalist, who was on the scene, said the target was undoubtedly the hospital. He said a 250-pound bomb crashed into houses near the hospital and four-inch rockets thundered through the walls of several hospital wards. He described how men, women and children ran screaming as the Ethiopian aircraft passed overhead time and time again. A few days earlier, the Western Somalia Liberation Front claimed that it was in control of a quarter of Ethiopia, including the town of Jijiga. Duran Ahmed, a member of the Front's Central Committee, described the Ethiopian air attack on the town.
