Background: Hannu Mikkola of Finland in a Ford Escort on Wednesday (21 November) won the four-day, seventeen hundred mile (2.735km) royal automobile Club (RAC) International Motor Rally. Mikkola, aged thirty-seven won for a second year in a run and gave Ford its eighth successive win. Another Ford team member, Britain's russel Brooke came second, and Tino Salonen of Finland in a Datsun was third. On Tuesday morning, half-way through the race, Mikkola was already well ahead.

SYNOPSIS: Mikkola took the lead on Sunday night (18 November) when Markku alen in his Lancia Stratos plunged off the road.

Here at the half-way stage he has a five minute start on the rest of the field.

His nearest rival is fellow Finn and team-mate Ari Vatanen also in a Ford Escort.

Another Ford Escort driver, Britain's Russel Brooke started Tuesday's leg (20 November) in third place. But fellow Britain Tony Pond in a Sunbeam Lotus stole third position later on.

Another Ford Escort, this one driven by Britain's Malcolm Wilson held fifth place on Tuesday morning. But Wilson fell back during the day.

The pre-race favourite, Bjorn Waldegaard of Sweden after early problems, had climbed to ninth place.

As the cars swung through the Dyfnant Forest in Wales, They ran into heavy fog.

The Fords held all but two of the first nine places.

At this point only British driver Tony Pond in a Sunbeam Lotus and Tino Salonen of Finland in a Datsun Violet seemed able to split the Ford domination.

Pond was fourth, then third in his comparatively untried Sunbeam, but was later forced out of the race when he rolled the car.

Markku Alen fought back to tenth place then went on to capture fifth position later in the day. Britain's Graham Elsmore's TR 7 pulls up with a puncture.

Sitting well back in twenty-fourth place Sweden's Walter Smolej in his Audi. Former two-time Ford team winner Roger Clark, later fell victim to a broken valve spring.
