  • Description

A rubber plantation at Padukka, southeastern Sri Lanka, was formally taken over by the State on Saturday (20 July).

The occasion was an important enough event to be attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Lands, Mr. H. Kobbekaduwa. It was also celebrated by a large and colourful demonstration by local people.

This nationalisation is part of a general policy by the United Front Government of Prime Minister Mrs. Bandaranike under which a large number of similar privately-owned estates of over 50 acres (about 20 hectares) are being taken over. Under this socialist measure the land is given over to the landless. Other types of estate -- tea and coconut -- are also being sequestrated and given to co-operative societies.

The Government has said that by the end of August a total of some 400,000 acres (about 160,000 hectares) of such land will have been nationalised.

At the Padukka rally Mr. Kobbekaduwa pointed out that these moves fulfilled one of his Government's election pledges. He regretted, however that the Government had been unsuccessful in bringing down the cost of living -- another election pledge.
