Background: The African Boxing Union has announced that the Commonwealth Bantamweight Boxing Champion Sulley Shittu of Ghana is to fight John Mensah of Togo for the African title in June.
SYNOPSIS: On Saturday (30 April) Shittu had a non-title fight in the Ghanaian capital of Accra, against Rodriguez Medino of Mexico, watched by some of the members of the ruling Supreme Military Council. Early in the fight Shittu went down, but it was his own fault and he was up again immediately.
Former world heavyweight Boxing champion Floyd Patterson of the United States in the yellow shirt. He was keenly interested in the fight and acted as a corner man for Shittu. The fight provided good training for Shittu. The Mexican, Medino, is regarded as a tough opponent, unlikely to get to the top himself but a formidable obstacle for anyone going for the title in his division.
Round Eight - the last round in the fight. Toe to toe slugging with both men finishing strongly. The judges made it a unanimous decision on points for Sulley.
Now Shittu will be going into training for his challenge against Mensah of Togo for the African Bantamweight title.
