    In a closely fought match in Rio de Janeiro, basketball champions the Soviet Union, defeated Brazil by four points on Tuesday (12 August).

    Brazil trailed the Soviet team by a few points almost throughout the game, although the scores were tied on several occasions, and Brazil held the lead briefly in the second quarter.

    But the Russians, including seven players from the successful Munich Olympics and the Puerto Rican World Championship sides, proved too strong for the Brazilians. Towards the end of the match, play become increasingly sloppy and the Russians moved on to their four point victory, with the final score 76-72.

    The Russian team's strength was boosted by Sergei and Alexander Belov. Alexander is considered the second best amateur pivot in the to defeat the United States for the first time in Olympic basketball history at Munich.

    SYNOPSIS: Rio De Janeiro, the Little Maracana Stadium at the start of the fourth round basketball match between Brazil and the Soviet Union in the Intercontinental cup. Russia, wearing plain vests, scored first. Strong attacking play by both sides kept almost even scoring through the early part of the match.

    Some excellent play put Brazil briefly ahead in the second quarter.

    The Soviet team regained the lead, but the scores were tied again in the third quarter. The teams, as well as the scores, were fairly evenly matched. There was just one year's difference in the average age of both sides, and the average height of the two teams was identical.

    Despite the strong Russian attack, Brazil fought on to keep fairly even scores in the closing quarter.

    But increasingly sloppy play gave the Soviet side a chance to improve its lead.

    Russia took the honours in the match, with final scores seventy-six to seventy-two.
