Background: Participants from 28 nations gathered on Sunday (19 July) for the opening of the 19th International Paraplegic games at Stoke mandeville just outside London.

This year for the first time there were teams from Hong Kong and Malaysia. Opening day events included archery, basketball, fencing, swimming and table tennis.

Abebe Bikila, the Olympic gold medal long-distance runner who was injured in a car crash in March last year, was among the competitors. The 37 year old athlete received treatment for neck and spinal injuries at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He spent some time on Sunday talking to guests and members of the Maltese team.

The Games finish on Friday (24 July).
