  • Description

President Pompidou gave a reception at the Elysee palace tonight (Thursday, 12 Nov.) for the world leaders, their representatives and delegations who attended the memorial service in Notre Dame Cathedral for General De Gaulle. More than a thousand people filed into the palace for the reception.

Later the people of Paris paid their own tribute to General De Gaulle when an estimated half a million of them marched in the rain along the Champs Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe.

Among those attending the reception were President Nixon and President Podgorny of the Soviet Union. The two leaders took the opportunity to have a 20-minute conversation, which French sources later described as a relaxed and non-political discussion. Mr. Nixon and Mr. Podgorny introduced their close advisers to each other during their talk.

The Shah of Iran attended the reception and told reporters that as he had known General De Gaulle since the second world war it was normal he should render homage to a personal friend and a friend of France.

Others there included the former Prime Minister of Israel, Mr. David Ben-Gurion, and President Makarios of Cyprus.

Later, the people of Paris marched, along the Champs Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe. They marched in the rain, many of them bareheaded, carrying flowers which they placed under the arch in the form of a cross of Lorraine.

After the three-hour procession the flowers were piled 5 feet (1.5 metres) high.

The march was led by ex-servicemen carrying banners. Thousands lined the sides of the broad avenue as the march continued.
