Background: About a 100 saxophonists from 13 countries gathered in London on Thursday (28 July) for the opening of the fifth world saxophones congress.

SYNOPSIS: The congress is being held at the Royal College of Music and the countries represented at the four day meeting include the United States, Canada, Holland, France, Scandinavia, Poland and Senegal. As part of the opening ceremonies, the saxophonists form all thirteen countries joined together to play "The White Cliffs of Dover".

The congress gives British saxophonists a chance to see what work is being done in the field in other countries. Officials say the saxophone has had very little attention in Britain. Saxophone tuition is available in very few schools and the shortage of tutors is becoming a severe problem. Nearly all saxophonists are, in some measure, self-taught, and none are specialists in the true sense of the word.

British saxophonists are hoping the congress will show people the achievements of saxophonists from other parts of the world and encourage more interest in the instrument. They say the request to hold to congress in London was a great challenge.

Previously in had been staged in the Untied States, Canada and France, where the musical environment is far more sympathetic. The programme includes performances by saxophonists form the participating countries and Britain will play some of the music written there for saxophone over the last few years.
