  • Description

Intrepid, the 1967 America's Cup winner, remained unbeaten at the end of Wednesday's (15 July) yachting trials off Newport, Rhode Island.

The 12 metre yacht is taking part in a 12-day set of races as part of the contest to decide who will defend the Cup against the next international challenger.

In Wednesday's race Intrepid defeated the newly built Valiant by a margin of 2 minutes 36 seconds and 500 yards (500 metres). It was her second victory over Valiant in two days. A crowd of spectator boats watched the contest as the yachts beat across Narragansett Bay. The win meant that Intrepid had won eight races in the trials and was yet to be beaten although a protest against one victory over Valiant is pending.

The final trials to decide the cup defender will be held in August and the redesigned Intrepid is the favourite over contenders Valiant and Heritage.

The challenge will come from either French or Australian boats who will race each other for the chance to take the trophy from the United States.
