Background: Jimmy Connors of the United States again showed his winning form when he won the final of the U.S. Indoor Lawn Tennis Championships in Philadelphia on Sunday (1 February).
The 23-year-old Connors, who has number one ranking by the Association of Tennis Professionals, defeated Swedish teenage tennis star Bjorn Borg, 7-6, 6-4, 6-0. The firs prize was 20,000 U.S. dollars (10,000 pounds sterling).
A record crowd of 14,000 tennis fans at the Spectrum courts took spacial notice of Connors's self-proclaimed new image. Connors has always displayed a quick temper on the court, but he says he is changing his style and is trying to be "nice". "I guess you can say my image has gone from awful to fair," he said after the match.
Connors took the first set from Borg in 56 minutes and the second in 42. The final set proved to be a formality for Connors with Borg capturing only four points and going down to defeat in only 19 minutes.
Borg, who was seeded second in the tournament, jumped off to a 5-2 lead in the first set. But Connors quickly moved into the attack. With lobs, dropshots and volleys, he brought the score to 6-6. It was Connors who won the tie-breaker and the first set.
Obviously discouraged, Borg dropped his service in the first game of the second set which was all Connors needed to win 6-4.

Obviously discouraged, nineteen-year-old Borg dropped his service in the first game of the second set. It was all Connors needed. He went on to a six-four victory.
Connors was at his best in the final set which lasted only nineteen minutes. Borg got only four points while Connors blasted winners to every section of the court.
Connors, rated number one player in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals, won the support of the fourteen thousand spectators for his good sportsmanship, part of his new image. he won the match point as Borg hit out. Connors earned twenty thousand dollars for the seven-six, six-four, six-nil victory in the first major tournament of the season.
