  • Description

More than one thousand Palestinian refugees, militiamen, commandos and students attended a Mass Rally of the guerilla group and Popular Democratic Front in Amman on Friday (July 24), and heard one of the Movement's leaders Abu-El-Abed reject the American Peace initiative emphatically.

Armed guards kept watch from the roofs of buildings as the Rally proceeded at the Wahdat Refugee Camp. The speaker Abu-El-Abed, a member of the Front's Central Committee, said the American proposals, calling for a minimum three-months cease-fire leading to indirect talks between, Israel, Jordan and Egypt, were aimed at liquidating the Palestinian Resistance.

He added that the Arab leaders could no longer decide the future of the Palestinian people. This was for the Commandos and their arms to decide.

Jordan's Government on Sunday (July 26) decided to join Egypt in accepting the American proposals for achieving peace in the Middle East.

Earlier the same day two other Arab countries, Syria and Iraq, rejected the plan outright.

President Nasser's acceptance to the plan was supported by his ruling Arab Socialist Union, but he told them peace was still far away.

On Saturday (July 25) another Arab guerilla movement, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, rejected the American peace overtures strongly. The Popular Front's leader Dr. George Habash told a press conference.

"We are determined to use all our strength to frustrate any attempts at a peaceful solution."
