  • Description

National Guardsmen and Police in several States have remained on the alert as a further wave of student demonstrations, against military involvement in Indo-China and the killing of four Ohio student demonstrators, has been gathering momentum.

In Columbus Ohio, ten thousand students from 18 campuses marched to the city centre yesterday (Friday) as they campaigned for non-violence and peace. The rally was organised by a coalition of college students from throughout the state. They had hoped to present petitions condemning the action of Governor James Rhodes in authorising the use of loaded weapons against civilians, censuring President Nixon, and urging the dismissal of the Commander of the National Guards, but officials had left beforehand.

Meanwhile in California, six thousand college students marched through Sacramento. The demonstrators.....mostly young...staged their protest peacefully. Many of their schools had been closed because of student unrest. At the State Capitol the marchers shouted their calls for an end to the Vietnam war. State Governor Reagan left the Capitol before the rally began, insisting that the student actions were wrong and undermining the respect of others.

The ugliest incident of the day (Friday) occurred when students rallying peaceably in New York's Wall Street were attacked by 300 helmeted construction workers from nearby sites. The workers tangled with the students before taking over the steps of the City Hall. Many were angry at Mayor Lindsay's sympathy for the students of Kent University and brushed the young protesters aside as they charged through light police lines and moved on to the steps beside the Federal Hall Memorial. Several in the crowd were injured during the scuffles, but no arrests were reported.
