SYNOPSIS: China opened its first ever trade exhibition in West Germany at Cologne on Friday.

West Germany's Economics Minister, Herr Hans Friderichs, officially opened the exhibition -- the biggest of its type ever seen in Western Europe.

Herr Friderichs and China's deputy-Minister for Foreign Trade -- Mr. Cahi Shu-fan -- then toured the exhibits. Accompanying them were officials and leaders of West German business and politics.

The exhibition mainly offered goods and products from China's agriculture and light and heavy industries.

When opening the trade fair, Herr Friderichs said his Government supported China's wish for closer cooperation with the European Economic Community and welcomed the fact that this issue was now under consideration in Peking and Brussels.

Besides the basic trade offerings, Chinese craftsmanship and handiwork was also featured.

Mr. Chai said China's self-reliance and independence did not mean that it wanted to be excluded from world trade.

In line with this policy of re-entering the global mainstream, China is also seeking to soften its former image and the exhibition also featured aspects of everyday Chinese life. After the official parties had completed their tour, the fair was opened for the public.
