  • Description

MOVING HOUSE IS ALWAYS A PROBLEM, BUT TO MOVE A HOSPITAL - NOT JUST THE CONTENTS, BUT THE BUILDING ITSELF WEIGHING 7,000 TONS - IS A REALLY MAMMOTH TASK. YET THIS WAS ACHIEVED BY DANISH WORKMEN WHO SHIFTED A COPENHAGEN HOSPITAL 54 YARDS (49 METRES) OVER A PERIOD OF THREE DAYS LAST WEEK.

THE BUILDING, USED BY THE X-RAY DEPARTMENT OF DENMARK'S BIGGEST HOSPITAL, THE RIGHOSPITAL, WAS MOVED TO MAKE SPACE FOR A NEW SITE NEEDED FOR EXTENSIONS. WORKMEN USED 1,100 IRON BARS TO LAY A TOTAL OF 19 "RUNWAYS" OVER WHICH THE X-RAY CENTRE WAS TO BE SLOWLY, CAREFULLY TRANSPORTED. AFTER A FORMAL "LAUNCHING" CEREMONY, COMPLETE WITH CHAMPAGNE, THE WEIGHT WAS EDGED FORWARD INCH BY INCH BY 12 HYDRAULIC JACKS UNTIL IT CAME TO REST IN ITS NEW POSITION. ALTOGETHER, THE "JOURNEY" COST GBP150,000 - BUT THIS WAS ONLY A THIRD OF WHAT IT WOULD HAVE COST TO DEMOLISH AND REBUILD.

AND, THROUGHOUT THE THREE DAYS' TRAVEL, THE X-RAY CENTRE CONTINUED ITS WORK, WITH PATIENTS COMING AND GOING. HOSPITAL STAFF SAID THEY WERE SCARCELY AWARE OF WORKING "ON THE MOVE".
