  • Description

HEART TRANSPLANT EXPERTS FROM EIGHT COUNTRIES MET IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) FOR THE FIRST-EVER INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THEIR DRAMATIC NEW SURGERY. GATHERED AT THE INVITATION OF HEART TRANSPLANT PIONEER, PROFESSOR CHRIS BARNARD, THE 15 EXPERTS WILL EXCHANGE NOTES AND MAY MOVE TOWARDS UNIFYING PROCEDURES IN TRANSPLANT OPERATIONS.

THE FOUR-DAY SYMPOSIUM IS BEING HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN, NEAR THE GROOTE SCHUUR HOSPITAL WHERE THE WORLD'S FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT WAS CARRIED OUT ON LOUIS WASHKANSKY LAST DECEMBER. DURING THEIR MEETING, THE SURGEONS WILL BE SPENDING SOME TIME EXAMINING DR. PHILIP BLAIBERG, THE WORLD'S LONGEST LIVING HEART GRAFT CASE, WHO STAGED A DRAMATIC RECOVERY FROM LUNG TROUBLE DURING THE PAST WEEK.

THE SURGEONS ARE EXPECTED TO COVER SUCH PROBLEMS AS POST-OPERATIVE CARE OF PATIENTS AND TISSUE REJECTION. THEY ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO DEAL WITH THE PHILOSOPHICAL AND ETHICAL QUESTIONS SURROUNDING HEART TRANSPLANTS, ALTHOUGH ALL ARE IN TOTAL AGREEMENT THAT TRANSPLANTS MUST GO ON.

IN INTERVIEWS AT THE AIRPORT, DURING THE ARRIVALS, ALL SURGEONS AGREED THAT TRANSPLANTATION WAS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SURGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CENTURY.
