    The first four and a half mile (seven kilometres) section of Washington's new underground railway system opened recently. The entire system due for completion in the 1980's, will be 100 miles (about 160 kilometres) long.

    Opening-day travel on the system known as 'Metro' - was free. The first fare-paying passengers travelled two days later, when nearly 4,000 passed through the turnstiles in the first five hours.

    The four-and-a-half mile route will be open Monday to Friday, from six o'clock in the morning to eight o'clock at night.

    Most of the Metro will be automated, including the operation of trains. But certain fail-safe devices have been introduced to prevent accidents. These include having a trained operator on board each train to monitor the automatic system.

    The system's architects have also been security-conscious.

    The stations have been designed so that there are no areas where criminals can lurk. Guards will patrol the stations and travel on the trains. areas not directly in their vision will be covered by revolving closed circuit cameras.

    A second 20-mile section will open n 1977 adding another 16 stations to the present four.

    Legal actions, rising costs and industrial disputes have plagued. Metro since it was started in 1969. Initially, the cost was estimated at 2,500 million dollars but delays may double that figure before the compete line is open.

    Legal actions, rising costs and industrial disputes have plagued Metro since it was started in 1969. At one stage, the seat upholstery had to be replaced in the trains because it didn't pass fire department tests. An estimated cost of 2,5000 million
    dollars may double before Metro is completed.
