  • Description

THE WEST INDIES CRICKETERS, HUMBLED ON THE FIRST DAY BY THEIR AUSTRALIAN VISITORS, STRUCK BACK ON THURSDAY, THE SECOND DAY OF THE FIRST TEST MATCH AT SABINA PARK, KINGSTON, JAMAICA.

THE HOSTILITY OF FAST BOWLERS WES HALL AND CHARLIE GRIFFITHS, THE STEADINESS OF OFFSPINNERS LANCE GIBBS AND TONY WHITE, THE INTELLIGENT CAPTAINCY OF GARFIELD SOBERS, AND A COUPLE OF FINE CATCHES ALL CONTRIBUTED TO THE WEST INDIES FINISHING THE DAY IN A GOOD POSITION.

AUSTRALIA, 32 WITHOUT LOSS AT THE START OF PLAY, HAD BY THE CLOSE LOST ALL BUT THEIR LAST WICKET AND, WITH A SCORE OF 211 FOR NINE WICKETS, WERE STILL 28 RUNS BEHIND THE WEST INDIES FIRST INNINGS TOTAL OF 239.

HALL HAD TAKEN FIVE WICKETS FOR 59 RUNS AT THE END OF THE DAY. HIS VICTIMS INCLUDED BOTH THE AUSTRALIAN OPENING BATSMEN. SIMPSON FELL TO HIS FIRST BALL, CUTTING IT STRAIGHT TO KANHAI AND LEAVING THE CREASE WITH ONLY 11 RUNS TO HIS NAME. COWPER, AGAIN FACING HIS FIRST BALL FROM HALL, WAS CAUGHT BY SEYMOUR NURSE. LAWRY FELL LBW TO HALL AND AUSTRALIA SUFFERED A FURTHER SETBACK WHEN O'NEILL, STRUCK ON THE HAND WENT OFF FOR AN X-RAY OUT LATER CAME BACK AND WAS CAUGHT BY BUTCHER OFF WHITE IT HAD ONLY THEN THAT THE AUSTRALIANS SHOWED SOME REAL DEFIANCE IN THE FORM OF HAWKE, THE AUSTRALIAN FAST BOWLER.

HAWKE AND PHILPOTT STAYED TOGETHER UNTIL TEA WHEN THE SCORE WAS 156 FOR 6, AND BY THAT TIME HAWKE HAD ALREADY PASSED HIS PARTNER'S SCORE. HE WENT ON TO SCORE AN UNBEATEN 44 RUNS.

BETWEEN THEN HAWKE AND PHILPOTT ADDED 40 RUNS BEFORE HALL STRUCK AGAIN AND HAD PHILPOTT CAUGHT BY WHITE FOR 22 WITH THE SCORE AT 176. GROUT WAS HALL'S FIFTH VICTIM, CAUGHT BY NURSE TO RUNS LATER. McKENZIE WAS BOWLED BY WHITE WITHOUT SCORING, AND WITH TEN MINUTES REMAINING MAYNE JOINED HAWKE. AT THE CLOSE THEY WERE STILL THERE WITH 29 RUNS NEEDED FOR A FIRST INNINGS LEAD.
