    Background: Athletes from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania took part in combined selection trials in Nairobi, Kenya, on Saturday (30 May) for the coming Commonwealth Games.

    As a result of the trials 18 Kenyan athletes will compete in the Commonwealth Games at Edinburgh, beginning on July 16. The Uganda and Tanzania teams have not yet been announced.

    Among placegetters in Saturday's trials were:
    Women's 100 metres -- won by Ayaa (Uganda) in 12.6 seconds.

    Men's 100 metres -- won by Charles Asati (Kenya) in 10.6 seconds. Asati takes his place in the Commonwealth Games team.

    Men's 1500 metres -- first place to David Mungai (Kenya) in 3 minutes 50.4 seconds. Mungai was selected to compete in this event at Edinburgh.

    The men's high jump went to Henry Cheruiyot (Kenya) with a jump of 6 feet 4- inches.

    A. Munabi of Uganda cleared 23 feet 1 1/2 inches to take the long jump. P. Onyango, also of Kenya, who was unplaced in the long jump came third in the triple jump and is in the Kenyan Commonwealth Games team.

    Kenya's star athlete, Olympic champion Kipchoge Keino, won the 5000 metres in 14 minutes 25.6 seconds and is a favourite for the Edinburgh event. Second place in the race went to another Kenyan runner, Paul Moses, who will also compete in the Commonwealth Games.

    The 18 Kenyan athletes selected are to spend three weeks training at a high altitude camp before leaving for the Games.
