  • Description

Alabama Governor George Wallace, partially paralysed from an attempted assassination, met several newsmen in his hospital room in Silver Spring, Maryland, on Wednesday (24 May). This was the first time that newsfilm of the Governor had been permitted since the attack on May 15. But, at Mr. Wallace's request no sound recording was permitted.

The Governor's family were at his bedside. He was in apparent good spirits about his showing the day before in the Oregon presidential primary where he was placed second. He did acknowledge, however, that he would not be doing any more campaigning--at least this year.

One of the newsmen in the room reported that although his spirits were good, the Governor appeared weak and talked in a low voice.

A bullet is still lodged near Mr. Wallace's spine. No date has yet been set for the operation. But, Wallace has said he plans to be at the Democratic convention in Miami Florida in July.
