    ABOUT 200 DELEGATES FROM ALL OVER THE IVORY COAST ATTENDED A TWO-DAY CONFERENCE FOR TEACHERS, AT ABIDJAN, STARTING ON THURSDAY LAST (7 JULY). THE COUNTRY'S MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, MR AMON TANOH, SPOKE OF HIS GOVERNMENT'S PLANS FOR SPEEDING UP THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE EDUCATION PROGRAMMES, SO THAT IT WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO MORE YOUNG PEOPLE.

    THE CONFERENCE WAS CALLED TO DISCUSS THE TEACHERS' RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE GOVERNMENT'S PLAN.

    DURING HIS SPEECH, MR TANOH ANNOUNCED A DECISION TO STOP THE RECRUITING OF UNQUALIFIED PEOPLE AS TEACHERS, AND REPORTED THAT A NEW MINIMUM QUALIFICATION HAD BEEN LAID DOWN.

    MR TANOH ALSO ANNOUNCED THE OPENING, FOR THE SCHOOL TERM WHICH BEGINS NEXT OCTOBER, OF 13 COLLEGES AND 500 PRIMARY CLASSROOMS.
