  • Description

Out comes the dogsled every time district Nurse Eleanor Hyde of Northern Manitoba, Canada sets out to bring medical aid to hew widely scattered Indian and Eskimo patients.

Operating from the town of Churchill, she relies mainly on her faithful husky team, and on an occasional airlift, in covering her huge nursing district which stretches from North of the Hudson Bay railway line to the border of the Northwest Territories. Since taking up duties last July, Miss Hyde has travelled many thousand miles, tending to the sick and injured in isolated communities.

Almost single-handed, the dogsled nurse recently carried out an immunisation campaign against diptheria, smallpox and polio. Her patients have come to look upon her as "florence Nightingale in a parka".
