Background: The director of the Palestine Liberation Organisation's Political Department Mr. Farouk Kaddoumi has been in Jordan, for talks with a delegation led by the Jordanian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hassan Ibrahim. Observers believed the talks mark improving relations between the P.L.O. and Jordan.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Kaddoumi and his delegation travelled overland to the Ramtha border post between Syria and Jordan. The Jordanian Foreign Minister Mr. Hassan Ibrahim was there to meet them and preliminary talks began immediately. But the main round of discussions was held in the capital, Amman. Their announced purpose was to review the current situation in the Middle East, but observers believed the main significance was that the talks indicated the rift between the P.L.O. and Jordan was healing. Relations between them have been strained since 1971 when King Hussein broke the Palestine guerrilla organisation in the country.
After three days of talks Mr. Kaddoumi announced that he was pleased with his visit which he said was "reassuring, positive and fruitful". It was his first visit to Jordan since 1971 and he said the reunion with his P.L.O. 'brothers; in Jordan was a sign of the organisation's improving standing in the Middle East.
