  • Description

BRITAIN'S TOP SINGING GROUP, THE BEATLES, FLEW HOME FROM NEW YORK TO A RAPTUROUS WELCOME THIS MORNING FROM 4,000 TEENAGERS GATHERED AT LONDON AIRPORT. MANY OF THOSE IN THE CROWD -- THE LARGEST EVER SEEN AT THE AIRPORT -- HAD BEEN WAITING ALL NIGHT TO SEE THEIR IDOLS.

THE BEATLES WERE RETURNING FROM MAKING THEIR AMERICAN DEBUT -- WITH SPECTACULAR SUCCESS, TOPPING THE AMERICAN HIT PARADE AS THE FIRST BRITISH GROUP TO DO SO. ENDING THEIR TWO-WEEK TOUR THEY HAD GIVEN A BIG SEND-OFF BY SOME 2,000 FANS FROM NEW YORK'S KENNEDY AIRPORT.

AND IN LONDON, DESPITE AN ICY WIND, SCREAMING FANS ARMED WITH BANNERS AND TICKER TAPE BEGAN LINING THE AIRPORT'S ROOF GARDEN TWO HOURS BEFORE THE "MERSEY SOUND" GROUP WAS DUE. AIRPORT AUTHORITIES HAD HAD TO CHANGE THE ARRIVAL SPOT FOR FEARS THAT THE ROOF OF THE NORMAL BUILDING WOULD NOT TAKE THE FANS.

WHEN THE AIRCRAFT, RENAMED "CLIPPER BEATLES" FOR THE OCCASION, FINALLY DID TOUCH DOWN, IT WAS SIMPLY JUST TOO MUCH FOR DOZENS OF GIRLS WHO FAINTED ON THE SPOT -- MANY THEN BEING HURT IN THE WILD RUSH AS THOUSANDS SURGED FORWARD TO GET A GOOD VIEW. A GLASS DOOR SHATTERED AS THE FANS TRIED TO PUSH THROUGH A POLICE CORDON TOWARDS THE TARMAC.

HANDBAGS, SHOES, HATS AND SCARVES LAY STREWN AROUND THE GROWN AS DESPERATE POLICE, WITH WALKIE-TALKIE EQUIPMENT, BATTLED TO HOLD THE CROWD BACK. THE SOUNDS OF THE GROUP'S BIGGEST HITS BLARED OUT, BUT NOT LOUD ENOUGH TO DROWN THE GIRLS' SCREAMS: "PLEASE, PLEASE, NEVER LEAVE US AGAIN".

A FEW FANS, BREAKING THROUGH THE CORDON, MANAGED TO REACH THE AIRCRAFT AS THE FOUR BEATLES -- JOHN LENNON, PAUL McCARTNEY, GEORGE HARRISON AND RINGO STARR -- WALKED DOWN THE GANGWAY AND WERE CAUGHT UP IN A MELEE OF CAMERAMEN AND FANS. THE BEATLES WERE BACK ... TO A FANTASTIC HOMECOMING.
