Background: It was a relatively quiet day on the occupied West Bank today, after days demonstrations in the village of Kabatiyeh, where a youth and a woman were killed by Israeli security forces. Today, the Israelis were expecting trouble and strong security was in evidence. However, apart from minor demonstrations in Nablus (where a curfew was later imposed on the casbah) and in Ramallah, it was all quiet. The village of Kabatiyeh itself was sealed off from outsiders -- especially the foreign information media -- while in Jenin, nearby, there was strong security but little action.
Big trouble is expected again on Friday, when the Jewish religious extremist, Rabbi Meir Kahane, has threatened to lay the foundation stone of a Jewish settlement near Nablus despite a military ban on his presence in the occupied area.
