  • Description

Barricades erected in the Chiya district of Beirut by left-wing forces during the civil war in the Lebanon were demolished by Palestinian soldiers on Saturday (31 January).

The ceasefire brought about by Syrian intervention had lasted twelve days on Tuesday (3 February). The Higher Military Committee -- the joint Lebanese-Palestinian-Syrian body in charge of supervising the truce -- said the situation was calm.

Syria also stated that it wants both the left and right wing factions in the Lebanon to agree to a political formula to defuse the conflict, which has cost more than 10,000 lives in the last nine months.

On Monday (2 February) it was reported from Beirut that government employees and school teachers had returned to work as the latest ceasefire showed growing signs of taking a firm hold in the capital.

Some factories were also expected on re-open -- also lending credence to the ceasefire.

Syrian Foreign Minister Abdel-Halim Khaddam, who has been leading the Syrian mediation mission, left for Damascus on Monday. Mr. Khaddam's departure precedes an expected visit to Damascus by Lebanese President Suleiman Franjieh.
