    TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 3:

REPORTER: "MR. MURDOCH, NOW THAT YOU ARE COMING IN CONTROL OF TWO BRITISH NATIONAL PAPERS, DO YOU ENVISAGE YOURSELF ON THE SAME LEVEL AS THOMSON AND BEAVERBROOK - PREVIOUS PRESS LORDS?"

MURDOCH: "NO, WELL, OF COURSE THERE HAVE BEEN MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE A GREAT NAME IN FLEET STREET RUNNING NEWSPAPERS AND BUILDING GREAT NEWSPAPERS - AND, WELL, TO THAT EXTENT, I YES - I HOPE TO BUILD A GREAT NEWSPAPER OUT OF THE "SUN".

REPORTER: "HOW DO YOU PLAN TO DO THAT - WHAT INNOVATIONS ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE IN THE "SUN" TO MAKE IT PAY?"

MURDOCH: "WELL, WE'RE CHANGING THE WHOLE PAPER. WE'RE CHANGING THE WHOLE ECONOMY OF IT, OF COURSE. THE OTHER "SUN" WAS PRINTED IN LONDON AND MANCHESTER, EMPLOYED 17 HUNDRED PEOPLE, WE'RE GOING TO EMPLOY 900 OR LESS, AND THIS HAS ALL BEEN DONE BY, AFTER WEEKS AND WEEKS OF LONG NEGOTIATIONS WITH ALL THE UNIONS CONCERNED. WE ARE GOING TO HAVE AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT APPROACH TO THE PAPER - WE ARE GOING TO TRY AND SELL IT TO THE PUBLIC, WHICH I DON'T THINK THE "SUN" HAS BEEN TRYING FOR A LONG TIME.

REPORTER: "ARE YOU GOING TO INCORPORATE THE FORMAT OF THE "NEWS OF THE WORLD" INTO THE "SUN" AND, IF YOU DO, DO YOU PLAN TO TRY AND COMPETE ON A LEVEL WITH THE "MIRROR" AND THE "SKETCH"?

MURDOCH: "NO, NO, THE "NEWS OF THE WORLD" IS A VERY, IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL SUNDAY PAPER IN ALL THE WORLD - AND I'M CERTAINLY NOT GOING TO COMPETE WITH THAT, IMITATING THAT CERTAINLY NOT GOING TO COMPETE WITH THAT, IMITATING THAT EVERY DAY. THAT'S UNIQUE AND ITS GOING TO BE LEFT WELL ALONE TO CONTINUE TO MAKE MONEY AND TO DO BETTER I HOPE. THE "SUN" WILL CERTAINLY BE COMPETING WITH THE "DAILY MIRROR" - IT WILL BE A SMALL-SIZED NEWSPAPER AND IT WILL BE AFTER EVERY READER IT CAN, WE'LL BE VERY HAPPY TO TAKE ONE FROM THE "DAILY MIRROR", OR "DAILY EXPRESS", OR ANY THAT'S AVAILABLE.

REPORTER: IF YOU CONTINUE TO INVOLVE YOURSELF IN THE BRITISH PRESS, DO YOU PLAN TO TAKE ON A TITLE ALONG THE LINES OF, WELL OF, KELMSLEY OF THOMSON OR........

MURDOCH: NO, NO, NO - I'M AUSTRALIAN AND I INTEND TO GO BACK AND LIVE THERE ONE DAY AND AS AN AUSTRALIAN, CERTAINLY IN AUSTRALIA, I WOULDN'T BELIEVE IN THE SYSTEM AT ALL.

REPORTER: "THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MR. MURDOCH".
