  • Description

Among German scientists, at Goettingen, Germany, working on problems of tomorrow, perhaps the most remarkable is war-blinded and armless Burkard Heim, 32, years of age.

Heim claims to be well on the way to achieving a way of converting light into power; and his work to date has already taken him to a position of considerable respect among his fellow scientists.

If Heim's theory - his "mesofield" theory - becomes reality, than space travel, for example, would be possible without the use of conventional fuels, or any fuels likely to be discovered in the future. Power would be derived from natural light sources.

Burkard Heim's theory is revolutionary and understandable only to highly qualified scientists, and in some respects derives from an earlier thesis of Einstein's.

Heim made his mark when he read a paper to an aeronautical meeting in Frankfurt.

At home Heim has the wholehearted support of his wife. His laboratory is a mass of apparatus, some of it very futuristic, and many instruments of his own design and construction.

The large piece of equipment, which we see in our picture, is his special secret; its function is to transform electromagnetic waves into kinetic energy.

If Heim is right, then space ships could travel without fuel or rockets.
