  • Description

It has been suggested that with every American passport goes one automatic, absolutely free, brand-new inferiority complex. And the uncertainty of the American about to go overseas has been furthered by the best-selling book "The Ugly American" which contains some disturbing, highly provoking portraits of Americans sent overseas by our government. We had the authors of "The Ugly American" on our show when their work first came out....included in their indictment was the warning that, especially in Asia, we were losing the battle of diplomacy to the Communists...our official envoys were ill-trained, of questionable ability and, with luck, sometimes well-meaning. As the other side of the coin, Dick McCutchen took a close look at the State Department's Foreign Service Institute, a school for diplomats in Arlington, Virginia. Here on one busy morning...in a few crowded minutes, are some of the activities he observed.

In the hallways of the Institute's Language School, the babel of many tongues...tomorrow's diplomats will speak much more than garden party English...

And in the Institute's Orientation class, a worried wife about to go overseas poses simple, but important, questions...

The Mid-Career Course, diplomats back from overseas assignment taking intensive new instruction. James Amory, back from three years in Paris... George Kaplan, two years in Saigon... Robert Martens, two years in Moscow... Alice Mulhern, two years Santiago...

The fledgling diplomats are not, as their critics charge, entirely ignorant of Communist tactics... this class is clearly titled "Anti-Communist Strategy"....
The man on the floor is Naval Lieutenant Duane Thorin, who was actually held prisoner by the North Korean Reds and subjected to brainwashing. His interrogator--Zygmun Nagorski, a long time observer of Communist tactics. For Lieutenant Thorin, it's almost too real...

Her questions are just as pertinent as those leveled at visiting speakers in the senior officer course, the State Department's equivalent of the War College. Today's guest -- former Ambassador from New Zealand, Sir Leslie Munroe...

27 different languages are not only taught at the Institute...they are studied with almost awesome intensity. These students, for example, are on their own time in the Institute's tape room...when they go into the field, pidgin English won't have to do....
Don Toussaint of Palo Alto, California, is 31 years old...has spent four years overseas on scholarships and on teaching jobs. In the Foreign Service, he is a new man..about to get his first overseas assignment..in Indonesia.

My four days in school had come to an end. And I left with the heartening hunch that, while the American diplomat might well be unattractive aesthetically, he is not, in sum total, ugly.
