  • Description

THE UNITED STATES -- ALREADY CLEAR OVERALL MEDALS WINNERS IN THE TOKYO STUDENT GAMES WITH ONLY ONE DAY OF COMPETITION LEFT -- WERE STILL LOCKED IN BATTLE WITH WEST GERMANY TODAY (SUNDAY) OVER SUPREMACY IN THE TRACK AND FIELD EVENTS. SECOND IN THE MEDAL LIST IS THE HOST COUNTRY, JAPAN.

JAPAN'S FIRST GOLD MEDAL VICTORY IN THE TRACK AND FIELD EVENTS CAME WHEN MISS MASAMI TAKEDA JUMPED 1.68 METRES. SHE ACHIEVED THIS ON HER FIRST JUMP AND FAILED IN THREE TRIES TO BETTER HER PERFORMANCE -- WHICH WAS, ANYWAY, THE BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE EVENT.

EDY OTOZ OF ITALY WON HIS SECOND STRAIGHT STUDENT GAMES 110 METRES HURDLES WHEN HE "NOSED OUT" RON COPELAND OF THE UNITED STATES IN 14.9 SECONDS. OTOZ WAS THE WINNER OF THIS EVENT AT THE 1965 BUDAPEST STUDENT GAMES AT 13.6 SECONDS.

THE GYMNASTICS GAVE JAPAN ANOTHER CHANCE TO INCREASE ITS NUMBER OF GOLD MEDALS, WITH THE ABSENCE OF THE SOVIET UNION FROM THE GAMES -- THE ONLY REAL COMPETITION THAT JAPAN COULD HAVE EXPECTED. A TOTAL OF 35 GYMNASTS FROM 12 COUNTRIES COMPETED IN THE TWO DAYS OF GYMNASTICS, BUT ONLY EIGHT OF THEM TOOK PART IN THE TEAM EVENTS.

JAPAN'S SAWA KATO AND DEFENDING CHAMPION AKINOBI NAKAYAMA WERE AMONG THE STAR JAPANESE PERFORMERS. NAKAYAMA, WHO WON THE MEN'S INDIVIDUAL TITLE AT THE BUDAPEST GAMES, PRESERVED HIS STANDING. JAPAN WON THE TEAM EVENT AS WELL WITH A TOTAL OF 86.65 POINTS.
