INTRODUCTION: The new Vice President of the United States, Mr. Walter Mondale, met French President?
INTRODUCTION: The new Vice President of the United States, Mr. Walter Mondale, met French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing in Paris on Saturday (29 January). Mr. Mondale was on the sixth and last leg of his whistle-stop European tour, which started shortly after the administration of U.S. President Jimmy Carter got underway in Washington.
SYNOPSIS: The meeting took place at the Elysee Palace and before the two leaders got down to discussing serious political business Mr. Mondale told President Giscard that he was slowly adapting to the physical demands of Kissinger-style diplomacy. When the French President asked him if he was suffering from jet-lag after visiting five European capitals in seven days Mr. Mondale replied "I'm slowly adjusting." Political observers in Paris say that the discussions with President Giscard were probably the most sensitive of Mr. Mondale's tour -- with controversial issues on the agenda such as limitations on the spread of nuclear technology. Afterwards Mr. Mondale gave details of the talks to a news conference, with particular emphasis on the future of the Anglo-French supersonic airliner, Concorde.
