United Nations Secretary - General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, has been having discussions with portugals new leaders on the country's decolonization problems in Africa. He is the first U.N. Secretary-General to visit Portugal. For a long time relations between the United Nations and Portugal have been strained. They were marked by repeated condemnations of portuguese Colonial policies in Angola., Mozambique and Guinea.
At the airport on Friday (August 2) Dr. Waldheim referred to the great changes that had occured in the country and said he was sure "that the United Nations, and I as its Secretary-General, will do everything we can to help over the decolonialization problem."
Dr. Waldheim has been having discussions with Prime Minister Colonel Vasco Dos Santos Goncalves, and Foreign Minister Dr. Mario Soares. On Friday (August 2) he lunched with President Spinola.
Vice-Admiral Rosa Coutinho, appointed recently to the head of a military junta to govern the territory of Angola arrived in Lisbon early on Saturday (August 3) for a flying visit which observers said was linked with Mr. waldheim's talks.
Dr. Waldheim's visit, which ends on Sunday (August 4) has renewed speculation that announcements are about to be made of independence for Portuguese Guinea-Guinea Bissau, and a ceasefire in the East African territory of Mozambique.
Dr. Waldheim is scheduled to give a press conference on Sunday and Portugal's information Minister said his remarks were expected to be of historic importance both for the nation and the world.
