  • Description

One of four KC - 135 Tanker Jet Aircraft of the USAAF Strategic Air Command attempting to met up Transatlantic speed records crashed shortly after taking off early on Friday, 27th June from the USAAF base at Westover Mass. All 13 men on board, including six journalists, were killed.

Two tanker aircraft had taken off successfully and were on their way to London when the third, according to some witnesses, hit power lines about 1 1/2 miles from the runway. The plane crashed on a motor road and debris scattered over a wide area. Aircraft officers on the base say the plane had made a normal takeoff.

The fourth plane, which was to attempt the round trip to London and back, did not take off.

The first and second planes successfully flew the 3,442 miles from New York to Brize Norton, England, in 5 hr 27 min 42 sec. beating the previous record by 50 mins. set up by an RAF canberra Jet Bomber.

The return flight was delayed for 24 hrs because of the accident.
