  • Description

A fierce blaze at a bottle factory in Bounds Green Road, London, caused considerable delay to motorists returning to London after the Whitsun weekend, June 6. Nearly 50 firemen fought the flames for several hours before bringing them under control. One foreman - Divisional Officer, W. Thomas - was overcome by smoke and later died. Several others were taken to hospital suffering from cuts due to flying glass and most of the firefighters were treated for burns. As yet the cost of damage is unknown.

Police were forced to divert traffic along side roads, creating a heavy traffic jam. Thousand of people who arrived or left their cars to watch the blaze added to the different task both the policemen and firemen had to contend with.

Trucks and vans had to be manhandled out of the way. The fire started among a pile of wooden crates stored in the plant. Two adjourning works, a metal working firm and a mason's, were damaged by the flames.
