  • Description

The steel-hulled yacht, British Steel, in which ex-paratrooper, Chay Blyth is to attempt the first solo circumnavigation of the world from east to west, was lunched on Wednesday (August 19) at Dartmouth, south-west England.

In six weeks time, Blyth, who together with Captain John ridgeway, was one of the first men to row the Atlantic, will set said in british Steel on a voyage which, largely against prevailing winds, will test both man and boat to the utmost.

Leading sponsor of the voyage is the State-owned British Steel Corporation. The yacht will remain at Dartmouth for the installation of nests and rigging and to complete her fitting-out.

British Steel will carry out her sea trials early in September. Commenting on the vessel, Chay Blyth said the chose an all-steel yacht because it was light but "tremendously strong". He predicted that during the voyage the yacht would have to withstand a more severe battering from the elements than most vessels receive in ten years' normal sailing.

Chya Blyth's voyage will take him first past Cape Horn, then past the Cape of Good Hope.

Present at the launching ceremony was solo-yachtsman Sir Alec Rose.
