  • Description

A symposium to discuss joint exploration ventures in oil-short countries and the sharing of technical know-how, opened in Vienna on Tuesday (7 March). Organised by the United Nations, the symposium will last for a week, and is being attended by representatives of more than 60 countries, some of them oil-producing Arab nations.

SYNOPSIS: Delegates were welcomed by Austrian Chancellor Dr Bruno Kreisky. He told his audience that because of the rarity and high cost of oil, it should not be marketed according to the principles of private enterprise. The United Nations called the symposium because it believes the recent mushrooming of state petroleum enterprises was a manifestation of mounting concern for energy resources and supplies. He said energy resources had become an urgent preoccupation for many countries.

Mr Ludwig Bauer, president of Austrian Oil Administration seen here with other delegates, spoke next on co-operation among state petroleum enterprises.
