  • Description

France's main white-collar workers' union staged its first strike since the worker-student revolt of May 1968 on Thursday (18 December) in protest at increases in Social Security contributions.

The Confederation Generale des Cadres (C.G.C.) union called on all its members, who include managers and executives, to join in the 24-hour protest. The C.G.C. strike co-incided with protest marches throughout the country, organised by left-wing opposition parties and leading trade unions, against the government's social policy and handling of army unrest.

The protests are seen by observers in Paris as an exceptional demonstration of unity by the left. They disrupted suburban train services and closed the Paris Stock Exchange.

The current unrest in France is focused on the Government's "anti-social and repressive policy" and the prime target for discontent is the record unemployment level of 1,020,000.
