Background: Ayub Kalule of Uganda has become the new World Boxing Association (WBA) Junior Middleweight champion, after winning a unanimous decision from Japan's Masashi Kudo, Kudo was attempting his fourth defence of the WBA crown which he has held for fourteen months.
SYNOPSIS: The Ugandan was in command of the fight right from the outset. In the first few rounds the fighters were just feeling each other out -- but even so Kalule showed his superiority.
There were no knockdowns during the fifteen round fight, however Kalule did stagger Kudo with some sharp punching.
For Kalule it was his first crack at a world championship match since being ranked as the number one contender two years ago.
Both boxers entered the ring with clean records. This turned out to be Kalule's thirty-first victory in thirty-one professional fights. He has won seventeen of them by knockouts. For Kudo, the defeats was his first in twenty-four professional fights. He has twenty-three victories including twelve knockouts.
The referee, Robert Ferrara, scored in 143 to 139 for Kalule. The two judges also gave Kalule the victory on points. Kalule has not announced when he will make his first defence of the title.
