    Pope John XXXIII - who has been holding a consistory for the election of 7 new cardinals - sent traditional messengers from the Vatican to inform church dignitaries of their new appointments, Mar. 28.

    Among those informed were the Archbishop of Tokyo, Peter Tatsuo Doi - who became the first Japanese cardinal, Bishop Bugambwa of Tanganyika - the first negro Cardinal, and Archbishop Santos of Manila, the first Filipino cardinal.

    The new appointers will be formally accepted into the college of cardinals when they receive their red hats at a solemn ceremony, Mar 31.
