  • Description

President Sekou Toure of Guinea arrived in Togo on Monday to begin a four day state visit. President Eyadema visited Guinea in 1976 and was awarded the highest distinction, the Grand Cross of the Order of Fidelity to the People.

SYNOPSIS: The impending arrival of President Sekou Toure was announced with great ceremony.

Both President Sekou Toure and President Gnassingbe Eyadema have had turbulent political careers, but the relationship between Guinea and Togo has been a good one. President Toure was given an enthusiastic welcome by President Eyadema.

The four day state visit began with formal ceremonies at the airport in Lome. The Togolese press hailed President Toure as a man who had worked for the dignity of his people and of all African people. Both countries, they said were committed to the national and international sovereignty of French speaking Africans.

The visit includes formal talks between the two leaders and cultural events.

President Toure's government freed 300 political prisoners at the beginning of the year, including senior officials, former ambassador, army officers and magistrates. They were among the people arrested after an unsuccessful attempt to invade the capital, Conakry in November 1977. President Eyadema has been in power for 11 years.

The bitter political in fighting and regional rivalry in the early years of independence has quietened down to become a relatively stable situation. The two leaders are expected to issue a joint communique on the final day of the state visit.
